Native Habitat:  Asia: Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and the Indo-Malaysian archipelago. Reported from Nepal, Cambodia, Viet Nam and Sri Lanka. Occurs in lowland wetlands to estuaries and peats . Found in ponds and ditches canals, reservoirs and mangrove creeks. Prefers clear water in areas with dense growth of rooted or floating macrophytes. Sometimes occurring in hypersaline waters. Feeds mainly on insects. Utilized for mosquito control.
Lives in streams and reservoirs at high altitudes, and in rivers, wells of the plains, low-lying paddy fields, swamps and brackish waters.   Utilized for mosquito control.
Temperament:    Males are a little aggressive, certainly when breeding with females. Therefore best kept in trios, rather than pairs.
Feeding:    Some flake foods high in protein and adult brine shrimp, along with live foods such as grindal worms, white worms, Daphnia, Moina, and newly hatch brine shrimp nauplii
Sexing:    Males more colorful and with display fins
Comments:    Is difficult to maintain in aquarium
